book graphic unix and linux troubleshooting guide

My Troubleshooting E-Book will show you how to solve tough problems on Linux and Unix systems!

This article is from a FAQ concerning SCO operating systems. While some of the information may be applicable to any OS, or any Unix or Linux OS, it may be specific to SCO Xenix, Open Desktop or Openserver.

There is lots of Linux, Mac OS X and general Unix info elsewhere on this site: Search this site is the best way to find anything.

Unix, Xenix and ODT General FAQ

I've burned a CD but can't see long filenames when I mount it on SCO

You probably used the Joliet format, and you should have used ISO-9660. You also usually need to tell your CD software that you want to use long filenames (they aren't all that long- 31 characters).

The pros and cons are: Joliet CD's can be read by just about anything (Dos, Windows 3.1, SCO) but you do NOT see long filenames unless you use a modern Windows machine (note that if you share the CD on a Win 95/98 machine, and access it from Visionfs on SCO, you will see long filenames). ISO-9660 CD's burned with long filename support can't be read by Dos or old Win 3.1 machines.
